On-Line Atlas of the San Francisco Bay Area
Focus
on Bay Area Transportation
The San Francisco area has one of the best deep-water harbours
on the US Pacific Coast. However, even with its large,
sheltered harbour, the Bay Area has faced a number of challenges
to its development. Natural barriers to the construction
of transport routes and infrastructure are one of the key
challenges that the Bay Area has overcome. Today, the Bay Area
has an excellent system of transport routes and infrastructure
that connect area communities with one another, and with the
world. This transportation system has played a key role
in the success of the area, giving the area's businesses access
to markets across the continent.
The maps below reflect some of the major transportation links
that have developed in and around the bay to serve automotive,
truck, and rail traffic. It is clear from the number of
major bridges in the area alone that a massive investment has
been necessary to bring the Bay Area to where it is today.
Major
Transport Links in the Bay Area
The
US Federal Government, through its funding of the national highway
system, has helped provide communities in all areas of the country
with access to national markets. The Bay Area has benefited
directly from this federal investment, with interstate highway
links to the north and south (via Interstate Highway 5), and
east (via Interstate Highway 80). The process of transferring
goods and people from land-based transportation to ocean-going
freighters is an important part of the area's economy.
