Stan is
Pastor of Outreach with a Baptist Church. Since coming on staff,
Stan has worked with the congregation's leadership to evaluate
what the church is doing to serve the community. Many of the
things that the church has done in the past, like sponsoring
a youth group, are things that many churches do. Stan wonders
if there are any areas of service that the church might pursue
that would respond to unique community needs.
Stan uses
business geographics to better understand the people who live
in the community around the church. In obtaining a profile of
the community, Stan develops an awareness of the kinds of needs
that exist in the area.

Information
on community factors such as demographics, incomes, occupations,
and family types can help the church plan to use its resources
to serve actual community needs. The church benefits by
avoiding devoting resources to "standard" church ministries
that don't happen to fit with the kind of people and needs actually
present around the church.
