mail targeting provides a map and database of postal areas that
have a specified market characteristic. In the map below, the
direct mailing is targeted to divorced people, so the postal
codes generated are those with a high divorce rate.

Canada: direct mail targeting involves generating the three
or six digit postal areas that have a desired market type (for
example, a three digit postal area would be S7N, while a six
digit postal code within the S7N area would be S7N 3Z1). Direct
mail targeting using six digit postal codes, as in the sample
map above, allows for a high level of precision in targeting
specific market segments.
In
the United States: direct mail targeting means generating
the zip codes or carrier routes having the desired market characteristic.
Direct mail targeting at the carrier route level allows for
the highest level of precision in targeting specific market
segments.
